Jerry Celebrates Mexican Independence Day

This past weekend, Jerry attended the Mexican Independence Day parade in Los Angeles. Staffer Nick Velasquez was part of the action, and chronicles his experiences below.

We started our day with a formal program, which Jerry, Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villariagosa, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles City Council Members Ed Reyes and Jose Huizar, City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, Cesar Milan (the "Dog Whisperer"), actor Danny Trejo ("Machete"), and former boxing champ Oscar de la Hoya all attended. Mexico's Consul General and other dignitaries welcomed guests to the celebration.

Following the formal program, Jerry met with LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia and District Superintendent Ray Cortines.

He then hopped aboard a double decker bus with Latino leaders like Congresswoman Lucille Roybal Allard, State Senators Gil Cedillo and Dean Florez, Assembly Members Kevin de Leon, Tony Mendoza, Norma Torres, and Ed Hernandez.

As the bus traveled the parade route, Jerry, Danny Trejo, and others waved to parade attendees holding signs, taking pictures, and clapping.

Jerry and the leaders who joined him walked the final third of the parade route to meet supporters and sign autographs.

At the conclusion of the parade, Jerry visited the local Democratic Party campaign headquarters, where he rallied those assembled to get out the vote.

Throughout the event, Jerry took the opportunity to highlight the clear contrast between his record and positions on Latino issues and those of Meg Whitman. In particular, he spoke of his longtime commitment to empowering Latinos, farm workers, and immigrants as they strive to realize their own California dream for themselves and their families.
