I'm amazed at what the man can achieve given everything on his plate. Herewith, the most recent attorney general success stories:
- The news of Bell city manager Robert Rizzo's astonishing $800K yearly salary spawned quite the frenzy in the media, and Jerry was quick to respond. Along with CalPERS, he launched a comprehensive investigation into Bell's compensation levels along with other local governments throughout California. On Monday he subpoenaed hundreds of employment, salary, and contract records from Bell, and said he is considering whether to initiate action against city leaders. Jerry is determined to protect the state's pension system from further abuse (read his pension plan here).
- Proclaiming that 'victims of crimes inspired by hate deserve every remedy available under the law,' Jerry secured a civil award against two men who engaged in a violent crime towards an individual they targeted based on his ethnicity. Thankfully, he also released an encouraging report showing hate crimes dropped by more than 20 percent in 2009, but reinforced the fact that we still have a long way to go.
- Along with Pleasanton city officials, Jerry announced a plan to end restrictions on new housing developments, clearing the way for new jobs, less congestion, and cleaner air.
- He engaged his elder abuse bureau to seek additional victims of a former home health care worker who siphoned more than $7,000 from her elderly client.
All in a hard week's work!
